A Climb Up To Gray's Peak & Torrey's Peak (Sep 2008)

Gray's Peak Trailhead
Some folks advise against hiking a 14er with a dog. I did a little research and found that there are good and sensible ways to protect your dog on such a climb. One person I talked to had climbed more than 40 of Colorado's 14ers with her dog. I took her advise and brought along chap-stick which I routinely rubbed on Jamaica's paws to protect them from cracking. It worked quite well. In fact she seemed to have fared much better than I did on the climb.

Gray's Peak (14,270’) and Torrey's Peak (14,267’) are two front range 14ers connected to each other which makes it easy to get two done in one day. There are several routes to take, and after thorough research (http://www.14ers.com), we decided on the popular Steven's Gulch route via Bakerville. My jeep's 4wd was helpful in making it to the trail head using this route.
